MCH-STAR is currently undertaking the three research and evaluation projects at a state level, in Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh and at a National Level. All MCH-STAR funded research and evaluation activities are undertaken only with the support of the respective national and state governments.

 
 A Technical Consultation on Advanced Cook Stoves for Improved Health of Women and Children

USAID, supported by MCH-STAR and the Market-Based Partnerships for Health (MBPH), held a technical consultation on Advanced Cook Stoves for the Improved Health of Women and Children in India. This technical consultation brought together leading global environmental and public health experts and companies that have worked extensively on advancing and marketing cook stove technologies appropriate to India. Highlights of the consultation were addresses by Timothy J. Roemer, Ambassador of the United States of America and Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Cabinet Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. USAID/India Mission Director, Erin Soto opened the meeting and Deputy Mission Director, Elizabeth Warfield provided the closing remarks.

The consultation was a unique opportunity to share cutting edge research on the impact of indoor air pollution on the health of women and children and the consequent beneficial effects of advanced cook stoves on health. It also provided a space for constructive retrospective analysis of lessons learnt from past experiences in the cook stove space and highlight current challenges in the commercializing advanced cook stoves.

The Keynote speaker, Dr. Kirk Smith, Professor of Global Environmental Health, University of California, Berkeley, spoke on Household Fuels, Indoor Air Pollution, and Health: Impacts on Women and Children across the Globe.

Jacob Moss, Senior Advisor on Energy and Indoor Air Quality, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, moderated the plenary on Indoor Air Pollution, Health and the National Program on Improved Chulhas in India. Speakers included Dr. Kalpana Balakrishnan, Professor and Head, Environmental Health Department, Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai and Dr. Hafeez Rehman, Social Transformation Director, The Energy Research Institute.

The plenary on Enterprise-Based Solutions was moderated by Jeroen Blum, Director, Shell Foundation, The Netherlands. Speakers included: Rakesh Sharma, Senior Director Strategy and Business Development, Philips India Limited; Harish Anchan, Managing Director, Envirofit India; Mahesh Yagnaraman, Managing Director, First Energy; and Dr. Mouhsine Serrar, CEO, Prakti Design Lab.

S. Patara, Vice President, Development Alternatives Group moderated the panel on Demand Generation and Distribution. Speakers included: Anuradha Bhavnani, Shell Foundation Advisor; Ashis Kumar Sahu, Chief Operating Officer, SELCO Solar Pvt. Limited; and Dr. Priya Darshani Karve, Project Coordinator, Appropriate Rural Technology Institute.

Parijat Ghosh, Global Account Manager, the Monitor Group moderated the session on Innovative Financing. Speakers included: Ron Bills, Chairman, Envirofit International; Eduardo C. Ferreira, Associate, Environmental Markets, JP Morgan; and K. Suresh, Chairman, Grameen Koota.

Dr. Rajiv Tandon, Chief, Maternal and Child Health, Nutrition, and Urban Health Division, USAID/India, explored Key Lessons Learned and the Way Forward. Speakers included Dr. Marta Levitt-Dayal, Chief of Party, MCH-STAR and Anand Sinha, Country Director, Market-based Partnerships for Health (MBPH). Discussants included Dr. Ambuj Sagar, Professor of Policy Studies, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Dr. Kirk Smith, Dr. Hafeez Rehman, and Jeroen Blum.


 Gender issues in Reproductive and Child Health

This regional level advocacy workshop was attended by approximately hundred district and state level officials from the Health and Family Welfare Department and ICDS as well as representatives from other NGOs. IndiaCLEN presented a consolidated presentation on the evidence from the five papers and the advocacy massages from the Technical Consultation on Gender and RCH in Uttar Pradesh: Exploring the Evidence. An advocacy brief was also provided as supporting materials.

This workshop resulted in divisional action plans to integrate gender and RCH interventions were developed.

This consultation explored evidence based linkages between various gender aspects and their impact on reproductive and child health. The following MCH-STAR supported, secondary data analysis’s of NFHS 3 data for Uttar Pradesh were used as the backbone of the discussion:

Paper 2: Sex Ratio at Birth, Son Preference and Use of Ultrasound in Uttar Pradesh

Paper 4: Effects of Women’s Autonomy and Male Involvement in RCH Service Utilization in Uttar Pradesh
Paper 5: Gender Differentials in Health Care Seeking for Children under five in Uttar Pradesh: Evidence from NFHS – 3.

Programmatic experiences from ISOFI and Yaari Dosti projects, by CARE (www.careindia.org) and MAMTA (www.mamta-himc.org) were also shared. This consultation resulted in evidence based key advocacy messages and an advocacy brief.


 National Safe Motherhood Day

This year marked a decade of the White Ribbon Movement in India. The theme this year was “Quality Maternal Health Care – Every Woman’s Right!” Around 70 people participated in this event, and Dr. Marta Levitt-Dayal, MCH-STAR COP and founder of the WRAI, released a booklet depicting ten achievements of the alliance.

Dr. Sunita Mittal of AIIMS launched the Million Mums web campaign in India and Dr. Aparajita, Country Director CEDPA, announced A Media Fellowship Award for the best investigative story/report (print media) on safe motherhood.


 National Consultation on Childhood ARI Case Management – Translating Research to Policy and Programs

The consultation looked at evidence from recent global and national research on ARI, particularly pneumonia, and assessed the implications of these research findings on policy and program. The consultation had approximately 60 Public health professionals and program managers involved in the management of child health programs, public health researchers and academia from medical colleges with potential to influence Government of India policies related to ARI case management and technical experts from multilateral and bilateral organizations.


 Technical Update and Panel Discussion Addressing Management Issues in Delivering Maternal and Newborn  Health Services

Maternal Health is a continuing concern for India. Despite a number of initiatives and measures targeted at improving maternal health, women continue to lose lives and remain at risk from maternal complications. Seeking to find solutions to the various management issues confronting maternal health, this event involved: a technical update on Maternal Mortality as a management issue in India by Deborah Maine (Boston University); a presentation on the Human Resource Management and a presentation by Dr. Dileep Mavalankar (Indian Institute of Management Ahmadabad); and a presentation on Using Information Technology to aid the management process by Dr. Ajesh Desai (Government of Gujarat). The session was attended by 80 people ranging from level government officials to local and international NGO maternal health experts and program managers.
